Between the notes: a [small] guide to Microtonal Music
Wrote this recently, following the incredible worldwide success and clamour around microtonal duo Angine de Poitrine. I wanted to pay tribute to these two geniuses by providing context for what a lot of people think is a new way of making music. Nothing more distant from the truth. Humans have been using microtonality forever, the thing is, it's microtonality for US, the western people that study and use the equal temperament which by definition, make the half step the smallest possible frequency division.
Both the Shrutis and these Aliens wanted to go deeper as explore Alien frequencies!
Expander On the Drum Bus! Why? Why not?!
This one came to mind after visiting a sound engineer friend in his new studio, we were playing around, trying stuff, listening to music and "test the room" if you want.
He went on talking about using Expanders on the drums bus and so I digged a bit and came up with this short article. Enjoy and get those drums pumping!
The Circle Of Fifth: Music's Most Useful Map
The article start started it all. I wanted to have a space on Substack to talk about music theory, techniques, instruments, plugins, history and whatever came to mind. So I started with this, if anything to try and explain how we ended up with this circle, what it means, what it represents and why it's useful.
For the funny ones out there, of course, you can drive, sail, run, walk without a map but that's no reason to consider maps useless.
